For routine healthcare needs, students should contact the UNH-in-Italy Program medical doctor, directly. Speak slowly and clearly when describing your symptoms. She is available in the evenings to answer your questions or to visit you. She may be reached in the evening between 18:00 and 21:00. She will come to your apartment if you would like her to visit you. The fee for a house call is 40 euros.
In case of a medical emergency contact the Resident Director and Program Coordinator immediately. The Resident Director and Program Coordinator are available to accompany you to medical facilities whenever necessary.
Pharmacies take turns being open on Sundays and during the night. You can find out which ones are open in the Sunday newspaper or by telephoning 192. The information is also posted outside each pharmacy.
Procedures for Medical Problems and Emergencies
The issuance of your visa required that you provide proof of medical insurance, which the Program purchases for students through INA Assitalia. This policy covers emergency care. You may wish to have an additional insurance policy to cover routine medical care. UNH-in-Italy is not responsible for any health costs above and beyond that provided by the INA Assitalia plan.
If you have a medical problem or emergency, we urge you to please follow these guidelines:
- Call the Resident Director or Professor Muscelli immediately. We will help you organize your care. You may wish to inform your landlord or host.
- If you require emergency assistance, you may call 118 (Guardia Medica) for an ambulance or you may take a taxi to the Emergency Room (Pronto Soccorso) at Ospedale Mazzoni, which is in the Monticelli quarter of Ascoli Piceno. If you pay cash at the emergency room, ask for a receipt (ricevuta) for your insurance company. You can call a taxi at 330.214500.
- If your problem does not require emergency room attention, there is a general practitioner who has agreed to see UNH students. She can also refer you to specialists, if this is needed. Her phone number will be provided during the orientation week. Please note that while the Doctor does speak English, it is important for you to speak slowly and clearly. She will come visit you directly in your home. The cost of the house visit, payable at the time of the visit, is 40 euro. Alternatively, you may ask your landlord to refer you to a family physician, or you may call the Guardia Medica (118), especially if it is night-time, when you may not be able to contact the Doctor or other offices. You will be asked to pay cash (approximately 40 euros); you will need a receipt (ricevuta) for your insurance company. In the event that you purchase medicines, your insurance company will want a receipt for those as well.
